HBO Developing Another 'Game of Thrones' Prequel Series

HBO is developing another "Game of Thrones" prequel series, this one focused on the origins of the Targaryen dynasty that long ruled Westeros.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that HBO has partnered with writer Mattson Tomlin, who is co-writing "The Batman Part II," to craft a series around Aegon Targaryen's Conquest.

The show would be a direct prequel to the current prequel, "House of the Dragon," covering the years prior to the Targaryen civil war, known as "The Dance of the Dragons."

The timeline for Aegon's Conquest includes one of the most cited periods in Westeros' history, as detailed by the report:

"The story follows the invader Aegon Targaryen, who conquered the continent of Westeros with his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, and their dragons. Aegon successfully unified six of the Seven Kingdoms in just two years, with only Dorne able to successfully resist."

HBO has discussed nearly 10 spinoffs to "Game of Thrones" since the series concluded in 2019. Thus far, only "House of the Dragon" has debuted. But the network also ordered a series called  "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight" last year.

"A Knight" is based on George R.R. Martin's "Dunk and Egg" novellas and starts production this year, with the following synopsis:

"A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."

The latest update regarding Aegon's Conquest raises further doubt about the future of the rumored Jon Snow sequel series.

Nineteen months ago, Martin confirmed that HBO was developing a series that follows the events of "Game of Thrones" called "Snow." Martin said Kit Harrington brought the project idea to him and HBO.

We are skeptical said series will ever come to light, given that it would require characters from the original series and sequels too many years apart rarely prove worthy.

See "The Godfather Part III," for example.

HBO CEO Casey Bloys responded to an OutKick story about "Snow"  last in November, saying the show "isn’t happening anytime soon."

I'd prefer a Jon Snow sequel series over another Targaryen prequel. "House of the Dragon" is well done. But how many shows about many silver-headed, sister-banging dragon riders do we need?

Apparently, HBO thinks at least three.
