George Strait Sets Record For Highest-Attended Concert In American History
Let’s be real, George Strait concerts are always a good time. But last night, "The King of Country Music" held a performance that was a good time in a record-breaking way.
Strait held a concert at Kyle Field in College Station, Tex., which is the home of the Texas A&M Aggies. The stadium can normally hold 102,733 people, but the event organizers needed more seats to fit the amount of people that wanted to see Strait perform.
Roughly 110,905 fans packed into the iconic venue to sing along with the author of "Check Yes or No" and "Write This Down." This massive crowd officially broke the record for biggest concert in American history. Previously, the record was held by a crowd of 107,019 people who attended a Grateful Dead concert at Raceway Park (New Jersey) in 1977.
But as one fan who attended last night’s event stated, Strait’s appeal reaches far and wide, especially in Texas.
"We actually heard rumor of it for about 3 or 4 weeks and went ahead and booked rooms ahead of time and then when they made it official, everything kind of took off from there," Tim Broadway from Anahuac, Tex., told KBTX News. "We were coming. Plain and simple."
Strait said during the set that he would gladly come back to this venue if the fans wanted him to.
"What’s going on everybody?" Strait said, according to Billboard.com. "We got some Aggie’s out there? Oh yeah! I’m ashamed to say this, but this is my first time to ever be in Kyle Field… damn! Just invite me back, I’ll come!"
Based on what happened last night, I think Texas everywhere would love that.
