This Mexican Wedding Reception Meal Sickened 100 Guests, Sent 80 To Hospital
Let's go to Mexico where a wedding reception dinner went very bad over the weekend in Cuernavaca, Mexico where 100 guests became very ill and 80 were sent to the hospital after eating a four-course meal.
According to The Daily Mail, guests were treated for bacterial infection.
What caused the fiasco? That's still under investigation, but one woman says the wild mushrooms that were served had a "very strong chemical" aftertaste and reported the same smell after she puked.
The meal was served starting at 6 p.m. and by 8 to 9 p.m. guests were puking and apparently destroying toilets, if one was available. Seriously, think about 100 people needing to drop diarrhea at the same time.
Were there enough toilets? It's hard to believe there were enough porcelain gods to handle that kind of volume.
Anyway, let's take a look at the menu and figure out what could've sent 80 people to the hospital that fast.
The wedding menu:
Appetizer: wild mushroom with goat cheese and tomato coulis, beet carpaccio with mango, pico de gallo.
Entrée: sun dried tomato cream and crispy goat cheese with chives; pistachio and pear dry cream.
Main course options: chicken breast stuffed with spinach, tarragon, sweet potato puree and winter asparagus.
Second main course choice: beef fillet breaded with whiskey and almond sauce, vegetable skewer and a bed of potatoes.
Dessert: apple rosette with supreme lime, blossom ice cream, chocolate and walnut cheesecake melon or milk flower chemise.
Was it the wild mushrooms?
According to Michigan State University, mushroom toxins can make people sick or even kill them if the mushroom contains enough toxins.
"Each person’s body reacts differently to mushroom toxins. For example, you could eat beefsteak mushrooms 10 times and be fine, but become seriously ill or even die the eleventh time you ate them because those particular the mushrooms contained enough toxin to cause illness or death. Even breathing the vapors from boiling such mushrooms can cause illness," the school reported in 2018.
"Always cook wild mushrooms, and pay attention to special warnings like whether or not they may react with alcohol. Never re-use the cooking water as it will contain toxins from the mushroom (unless it is a mushroom that is specifically okay to use as soup stock)."
As for the chemical smell reported by one of the wedding guests, there are multiple Reddit and Quora threads on this phenomenon where experts say to throw out the mushrooms that have an ammonia scent.
But, until the Mexican medical experts release their findings, we can't rule out it wasn't one of the other menu items.
