Engaged WNBA Teammates Rock America With Magazine Shoot
The WNBA continues to generate content so fast and furious I don't even know that America is able to keep up. Lord knows I'm not.
Admittedly, I've never watched a second of the WNBA until this year. I feel like most of America is in the same boat. Frankly, unless I have a Caitlin Clark parlay cooking, I still don't really watch. I'm just not a basketball guy. Not my thing.
But I am a #content guy. And a drama guy. Especially in the dead of summer when all eyes are on the political side of things, because nothing is going on in the world of sports.
So, when something juicy does come across my radar in the world of sports – especially when it has to do with the inner-workings of WNBA relationships – I'm all in.
In that vein, I'd like to introduce everyone to DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas. A couple of stars on the Connecticut Sun who also happen to be engaged. The happy couple made their big, national debut earlier today on the cover of Slam magazine, and the internet wasn't ready for it.
The WNBA continues to set the bar for content this summer
I could go on and on – the replies are a vast wasteland. Bottom line? America wasn't ready for this couple, but here they are. Buckle up.
From Slam:
The two have been dating for the past few years, and during 2023 All-Star Weekend out in Las Vegas, Alyssa proposed to DeWanna underneath the shade of palm trees accented by candles and hundreds of roses.
They started off as competitors and still are in some ways. DeWanna drafted to the Phoenix Mercury in 2009. Alyssa drafted to the New York Liberty and immediately traded to the Connecticut Sun in 2014. Ahead of the 2020 bubble season, a blockbuster trade sent the two down the path of a relationship as teammates that eventually turned into partners.
As seamless as the highlights look, the couple warns that playing basketball every single day with your partner isn’t as magical as one might think it is. There are angles, reads and passes that Alyssa may see that DeWanna doesn’t, and vice versa.
"It’s like a gift and a curse. You’re playing with somebody that’s the best in the world and she’s also your partner, so you get to bounce ideas off of each other, you talk basketball. But also, it’s competitive; we go at it on the court as well," DeWanna says. "But I still want to bust her up on that court."
"It’s mostly that she wants to bust me up on the court," Alyssa responds. "Nine times out of ten."
Again, I'm new to the WNBA. We all are. It's been a wild little ride so far, with Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese drama on the court, and relationships – new and old – off of it.
This is the second such instance over the past month where America was rocked to our core by a WNBA power couple. Remember Kate Martin's rumored girlfriend taking over the internet late last month? Wild.
And now, this. Welcome to the show, DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas. Let's get to work.
