Elizabeth Hurley Has To Be On Some Anti-Aging PEDs, Mahomes-Tyreek Baby Race & Pasta In The Pool

It's 12U championship Saturday & the Pandora algorithm just dialed up Phil Collins ‘In the air tonight’

Those of you who were around last year remember my rookie season as a coach and how the 10U boys put together a tournament run only to get no-hit in the championship game. Very few days go by without me thinking about that night. I haven't forgotten that feeling of dread from the boys as their season came to a screeching halt.

Last night, as I was succin' down a couple of beers on the patio, I was talking to Mrs. Screencaps about how I don't want this year's team to feel that pain. I'm going to have nine boys for this 11:30 a.m. ET first pitch. No subs. It's going to be hot. The catchers will be put to the test. The offense will face at least two kids who throw heat just like last year's championship.

My assistant Scott G., who has been such a valuable asset, is in North Carolina for vacation.

Today is going to be a massive test. I'd be lying if I said there aren't some butterflies with the league bringing out the hardware to present to the championship Saturday winners.

It's time to slay some demons.

A couple of  things I don't like to recommend because it sets off people and I would rather just lay low

  1. My favorite Mexican restaurants. About 14 years ago, Mrs. Screencaps and I happened upon a start-up Mexican joint that was holed up in an old Wendy's. It was a husband and wife. We were the only customers on Saturday nights for months. Around that same time all those years ago, Mrs. Screencaps and I were at a suburban patio party & the subject of favorite Mexican places came up. We offered up our Mexican joint in the rundown old Wendy's & it was an instant lecture about how horrible the place is. Fast-forward to 2024. The same guy who started that shithole Mexican joint in a Wendy's now has four locations and is considered the best Mexican restaurant owner in Toledo. I just stay quiet about our favorite Mexican places. Don't ask.
  2. Pillows. Last week, someone emailed me to ask about the Purple Pillow that I bought like two years ago. I've said that the pillow has been a great purchase ($179; #notsponsored). Then Mike T. in Idaho goes out and buys the Purple Pillow and he's used it the last two nights. I like Mike T. He's one of the legends around here. I really didn't want to influence him into a big purchase of a pillow and it be a complete dud. Unlike the couple who snapped on my wife and I over our Mexican restaurant life choices, I don't think Mike would be so triggered if the pillow doesn't perform. Still, I'm nervous to put my stamp of approval on a pillow because it's such a personal experience. We'll see how it goes.

Costco smoker pellets

- Kevin in Toboso shares:

I second Mike T on their pellets. Very good buy.

I highly recommend smoking blocks of cream cheese or two as an appetizer. Left-cream cheese covered with homemade candied jalepenos

right- dill pickle with venison summer sauge. Both were excellent.  Smoke setting for about 1.5 hours. Eat with crackers or dip style tortilla chips.

Kinsey:

I'm taking the left side because of the candied jalapenos.

Tricking media outlets with names like Jack Mehoff & Heywood Jablome

You'll have to zoom in on your phone. Check out the cutline on the photo.

- A.C. shares this one:

I think this is from the Fargo Forum - you know that the guy who told the reporter his name pronounced it like "blom" lol

Old Pizza Huts

- Jeremy in Pensacola checks in:

Had to share this old Pizza Hut being repurposed as…….A cannabis dispensary!! Very 2024 of them.

Kinsey:

What's your theory on why weed dealers love converting these old Pizza Huts to their storefronts? I told Jeremy that I think it has something to do with the smells baked into the walls of the place. The dopers walk in, get a whiff of a large meat lovers and it triggers memories of smoking a bunch of weed and eating pizza.

I swear there should be s study on this. These dope dealers might be onto something.

- Michael S. tells me:

Randomly stumbled upon this website years ago.  Somebody started to document what old Pizza Huts had become.  Don't think it is all that active anymore.

Let's have a sunset-off

Here we go again.

- Isaac wants in on this battle:

Just spent 3 days on a company retreat in West Virginia at the Boy Scout facility named The Summit Bechtel Reserve and the sunset views did not disappoint.

Reaction to Paul Skenes being pulled with a no-hitter going and 99 pitches on his elbow/shoulder

- Franco writes:

I can't believe they pulled Paul Skenes after the 7th inning when he was throwing a no-hitter because of the pitch count. He could've finished and had a long break because of the All-Star game. The decision was just mind numbing.

Also, why do the Pirates care about his pitch count? When his contract is up he'll sign a bazillion dollar contract with the Yankees. It's a Pirates tradition to ditch all their best players to save money. So why worry about his arm?

Kinsey:

Good point. What are the chances the Pirates will be able to fork over $500 million to Skenes? I guess the plan here has to be to save his arm so he's not destroyed when it comes time to trade him for 20 of the Yankees' top minor leaguers.

Taking kids to their first MLB games

- Nathan K. shares:

In 2021, I took my son, then 7 yrs old, to his first Atlanta Braves game at Truist Park. Seeing his eyes light up when walking through the Battery and seeing the stadium live for the first time was awesome. He was recognizing things he saw on TV and was mesmerized.

This kid had a unique series of events not typical for a first game. First, our seats were right behind Acuna at the Chophouse in right field complete with concierge service. They belong to a client. He got a lot of free merch from the hottie Braves marketing girls including an unreleased Ozzie Albies bobblehead and chain.

Then Steven Vogt hit a homerun that landed 5 seats down from us and bounced back onto the field. It was picked up in right field by Juan Soto who threw it to my son with a big smile. Braves won that game and went on to win the World Series that year. Great first game.

The best time of day for golf tee times

- Jim T. in San Diego on Torrey Pines tee times:

For Torrey, though, I’d suggest a different approach. I’d try to get a tee time so that you’re finishing up at 18 shortly before sundown. Give yourself time to get a seat on the patio at The Lodge at Torrey Pines so you can enjoy your libation of choice as the sun sets over the Pacific. And Torrey isn’t La Quinta: even late afternoon, it’s not going to get all that hot right there on the ocean. Another consideration is that this time of year, the morning groups have a solid chance of sitting around waiting out a fog delay.

Agree with Indy Daryl about GAB – caught my first game there last month when the Cubs were in town. Got to see Elly live and in person, and he jacked a homer to right that looked like it was still on its upward trajectory when it hit the seats. First game was at Crosley as a kid, grew up going to Riverfront, but GAB is not only better than those but it compares favorably to Petco and Camden Yards for my money. (And it was great to be wearing my Reds gear and be part of the majority for a change …)

Brunswick, GA correction

- Patrick D. emails:

Reader Jim is wrong - there are no auto assembly plants in Brunswick.

It is a RO/RO port - roll-on, roll-off - and thousands of autos are brought in and out of the port from the rail hub there. But there are no auto assembly plants there.

Just wanted to set the record straight.

Let's go have a great weekend. You're never getting mid-July 2024 back again. Go out and make it a memorable occasion. After this 12U championship game, and then the all-star game, my ass is getting in the pool.

Have fun.
