Demi Lovato Picked The Worst Possible Song To Sing At American Heart Association Concert
Read the room, Demi Lovato.
The pop singer headlined the American Heart Association's annual "Go Red for Women" concert Wednesday night. The goal of the event is to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as one of the leading killers of women.
So which song did Lovato decide to belt out? Her 2013 hit "Heart Attack."
It was an odd performance given the nature of the event. But the song choice was especially odd for Lovato, who previously suffered three strokes and a heart attack during a near-fatal overdose in 2018.
And as video of the performance circulated on social media, even Lovato's biggest fans cringed.
"Well that’s a bit dark, don’t you think?" one user posted on X.
"She didn’t think this one through," another critic wrote.
"I think ‘Heart Attack’ should have been left off that list, considering there was a roomful of people who have had heart attacks," another fan said on TikTok. "I just don’t know the motivation behind that one."
But, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the song was actually a strategic move for Demi Lovato.
The singer explained that she thought she wouldn’t be able to perform that song again following her near-death experience. But she expressed to the audience how she recently "reclaimed" the tune for herself.
"While my next song is about the intense feelings that come with falling in love as well as heart break, opening yourself up, taking risks and not being afraid to do it again, this song has many parallels for me, my journey and a reminder for all of us in the room just how strong the mind-heart-body connection truly is," she said.
At least she gave a disclaimer before the song. Otherwise, that could have been really awkward.
