Chris Brown Has Hilarious Spinal Tap Moment, Gets Stuck Dangling From Wires
Singer Chris Brown found himself living out a Spinal Tap moment in New Jersey as he spent two songs dangling from wires above the stage.
Let's get item No. 1 out of the way first: No, I didn't realize people still went to Chris Brown shows. I don't think it's unfair to say that he doesn't seem to be a particularly nice man (that's an understatement), and that was clear from some of the videos that surfaced from his recent show in Newark.
Brown was performing his song "Under The Influence," when he tried to do some stunt where he got lowered onto the stage from the rafters, only for the wires to get stuck.
To Chris Brown's credit (I can't believe I just typed that) he continued singing, while a ladder was brought out on stage for him to climb down.
Of course — since he's Chris Brown — he appeared to almost immediately berate his stage crew.
What was so funny about this to me was that it was a perfect Spinal Tap moment. I don't mean that in the sense that something goofy went wrong during a concert, I mean that Spinal Tap did that exact thing as a bit.
It wasn't in the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap (my favorite movie of all time), but it was in a concert film called The Return of Spinal Tap shot at London's Royal Alber Hall that they did in the early 1990s that came out around time as their second real-life album, 1992's Break Like The Wind.
For the opening song, "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You," all three band members descended from the ceiling on wires. While David St. Hubbins (Michale McKean) reached the stage with no issues, Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) spent the whole song suspended above the stage.
It's hilarious, and it's exactly what happened to Chris Brown.
So funny. God, I love those guys; even that lunatic Rob Reiner for his role as documentarian Marty Di Bergi.
By the way, they're working on Spinal Tap II as we speak…
Maybe Chris Brown will have a sense of humor about that faux pas (not likely), but even if he doesn't the rest of us can have a nice laugh at his e̶x̶p̶e̶n̶s̶e̶.
