Bob Costas Blasts Trump, Says His Supporters Are In A 'Toxic Cult;' Also Questions If Biden Should Be Running

Legendary sports broadcaster Bob Costas hopped on CNN to talk some politics, and it was one of those rare appearances where he probably angered everyone along the political spectrum in one fell swoop.

That's hard to do.

Costas was a guest on the CNN program Smerconish, and if for whatever reason you didn't have any clue where Costas stood on the 45th president of the United States, he laid it out pretty clearly.

"He is by far the most disgraceful figure in modern presidential history. He’s only become more disgraceful since 2016 and since 2020," Costas said, per Fox News Digital. "He is a bubbling cauldron of loathsome traits."

I mean, he's not saying anything every left-leaning person toeing the political party line hasn't said. Usually, you can get away with criticizing Trump himself. No one really gets that bent out of shape because Costas — like everyone — has the right to express his opinion whether you agree with it or not.

Where Costas might be on the receiving end of some strongly-worded tweets is when he took swings at Trump's supporters.

"You have to be in the throes of some sort of toxic delusion and in a toxic cult to believe that Donald Trump has ever been, in any sense, emotionally, psychologically, intellectually, or ethically fit to be President of the United States," he said. "But his supporters are locked in on that."

Oh, Bob…

I'll always respect Bob Costas for hosting through a bout of pink eye at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Pink eye sucks, I once had to play a high school championship game with it. We lost 6-0. I blame the pink eye.

But the thing that drives me nuts is when people try to paint what amounts to half the country with these kinds of broad brush strokes. We all know that there are plenty of people who aren't fans of Trump as a guy, but have seen their life under Biden. They see a border so weak that "border" doesn't even sound like the right word, and various economic issues impacting their daily lives.

Given the choice between the two, it's not "toxic delusion" that would make people pick Trump over Biden.

Costas May Have Blasted Trump And His Supporters, But He Had Some Thoughts About Biden's Fitness For A Second Term Too

However, despite ripping on the millions of people who have or will vote for Trump, you've got to hand it to Costas for recognizing that Biden isn't a viable candidate either and couldn't read the room that it's time for him to hang it up.

"He had a chance to be seen as a statesman and a patriot. Now his legacy is likely to be that of a man whose hubris prevented him from seizing the moment in an appropriate way, and at best, he can squeak by Trump – that’s at best," Costas said of Biden.

Costas pointed to Biden's inability to even handle a soft-ball Super Bowl interview as a reason why he's not ready to go toe-to-toe with Trump,

"His own staff knows that he has to be bubble-wrapped – that he can‘t do a Super Bowl interview. It‘s sad to say, Biden is obviously, on balance, a decent man. He served his country and no matter what, sane people will vote for him over Trump. But it’s a hell of a risk to send this guy out there."

"Trump is a monster. You shouldn‘t send this guy out there at this point in his life to try and slay the dragon."

There was definitely more teeth behind Costas' critique of Trump, but I know one thing: he's going to hear it from all kinds of different people.
