There's One Classic Spy Series Everyone Needs To Watch

"Alias" remains one of the best TV series ever made.

We've continued to crank out pieces flashing back to some great classic shows, and I found myself thinking that I definitely couldn't not spend some time talking about the ABC hit with Jennifer Garner.

The series is a great reminder of what television at its best can be. For that reason and more, it's time to take a walk down memory lane.

Let's roll!

"Alias" was a great TV series.

  • Cast: Jennifer Garner, Bradley Cooper, Ron Rifkin, Michael Vartan, Victor Garber and Carl Lumbly
  • Episode count: 105
  • Original premiere date: September 30, 2001
  • Original network: ABC
  • Streaming: Disney+ and available for purchase elsewhere.
  • Plot description via IMDB: Sydney Bristow is an international spy recruited out of college, trained for espionage and self-defense.

"Alias" is one of the first TV shows I ever truly fell in love with, and yes, I had a huge crush on Sydney Bristow (Garner) as a little kid.

I thought the show was unbelievably badass. The timing also couldn't have been more perfect as it premiered a few weeks after 9/11. The country was finding out about the power of the American military and intel agencies, and the latter part of that is what "Alias" is all about.

The show starts with Bristow being recruited out of college to work for a mysterious organization working in the shadows known as SD6. She believes it's a black ops cell of the CIA.

In reality, SD6 is part of a massive criminal organization working against the interest of the United States. Following the death of her fiancé and an assassination attempt on her own life, she learns the truth and turns into a double agent for the CIA.

From there, viewers are taken on crazy adventure after crazy adventure as Sydney learns the truth about her parents, the main antagonist Arvin Sloane and the man she falls in love with - CIA agent Michael Vaugh.

Bradley Cooper also had a solid role in the series prior to him becoming a legit A-list talent.

The later seasons of the show focuses heavily on a man named Milo Rambaldi - a figure from the Renaissance times whose creations and works play a pivotal role in what Sydney and Sloan are chasing.

That's where the show has some of its best moments as it combines traditional spy drama with some sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal elements.

The other thing "Alias" did very well was show viewers that you can have a badass female lead without it being preachy or woke. Jennifer Garner kicked butt as Sydney Bristow. The character was an absolute savage, and it's a shame writers in our current climate have chosen to go woke over that template.

If you want to walk down memory lane with a show that is now more than two decades old but still awesome, give "Alias" a shot. Have you already seen it? Then let me know what you think at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
