Jake Paul, Tyron Woodley Set For Rematch After Tommy Fury Bows Out
Just a few weeks after Jake Paul announced he would face Tommy Fury, an actual boxer, it seems as though he won't be facing Fury after all.
Paul and Fury announced the bout at the end of October and held a press conference in November, where the two took verbal jabs at each other, but Fury's team says he suffered a broken rib and is dealing with a chest infection and won't be able to fight.
Paul (4-0, 3 KOs) will now face Tyron Woodley (19-7-1 MMA) in a boxing rematch, MMAFighting.com reports. Paul and Woodley are set to meet in the new headliner of the Dec. 18 Showtime event that takes place at Amalie Arena in Tampa.
“When my team woke me up on Friday to tell me Tommy was pulling out, I told them I’m ready to fight anyone on December 18,” Paul said in a news release. “Troy, Trey, Trevor, Travis. I don’t give a damn who it is. So, as I predicted Tommy Fumbles and Tyron is there to pick it up, stepping in, and contractually he is getting an extra $500,000 if he knocks me out. First time I outboxed him. This time I’m gonna punish him and leave no doubt.”
Paul posted a video to his social media addressing the change and said if Woodley can knock him out, he'll give him an extra $500,000.
“It is official, Tommy Fury is boxing’s biggest b*tch,” Paul said in the video. “He has pulled out of the fight. The Furys have pulled out of the fight due to a medical condition, who knows what’s going on in that camp? I think he has a bad case of 'pussitis.' I couldn’t believe the news at first. This still doesn’t even seem real. He fumbled the biggest bag of his life. Now he will be watching at home, paying me $60 instead of getting paid millions of dollars to fight me. I fought with a broken nose, I fought sick, get the f*ck over it. This is boxing. It’s official, he was scared, I think the pressure got to him, the sh*t talk got to him. That’s the bad news, guys."
Paul continued: "The good news is that Mr. Tyron Woodley, we called him up and we were like, ‘Hey, you want to take the fight?’ He has been training. He goes, ‘Sure, I’ll take the fight, let’s do the rematch, run it back.’ I’m giving him $500,000 extra if he can knock me out. Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley 2. Leave no doubt. I didn’t knock him out the first time, I’m coming back and I’m getting that crazy W, the crazy highlight-reel knockout. Dec. 18, the show must go on, I’ll see you guys there.”
Paul stunned viewers with yet another improbable win after he defeated UFC’s Woodley in an eight-round event in August. The cruiserweight victory was decided by split decision, scoring Paul two winning cards, 77-76 and 78-74, against Woodley’s 77-75.
Woodley was an underdog heading into the August bout, as he was -190 while Paul was +160. Woodley put forth a solid outing though and nearly pulled off the upset against Paul. Woodley landed the hardest shot of the fight when he almost sent Paul through the ropes in the fourth round.
“It’s done. We’re doing the rematch,” Woodley said after the bout.
The two fought in August at a Showtime event in Cleveland, and with Woodley immediately calling for a rematch ... it seems like he'll get his chance after all.
