You Won't Believe How Much Shane Mosley Bet On Himself To Beat Canelo In 2012

Hall of Fame boxer “Sugar” Shane Mosley took the old adage “bet on yourself” to a whole different level nearly a decade ago.

Mosley recently admitted in an interview that he wagered an incredible $1,000,000 on himself to beat a then 21-year-old Canelo Alvarez at the MGM in Las Vegas in 2012. Problem is, he wasn’t even getting paid that much for the fight, and had to dip into his own pocket after the loss.

"I bet a million dollars and I lost so I ended up having to pay back 400,000 dollars. For getting my butt kicked I had to pay $400,000,” he said.

Alvarez was the lightweight title holder at the time, sporting an incredible 40-0-1 record at a very young age. Mosley was over 40 years old and would only fight five more times after the defeat, but apparently none of that mattered. He truly believed he would win the fight and cash in on the 6-1 odds he was given.

"They were gonna pay me $600,000 , but I made a bet for a million dollars that I was gonna beat Canelo, and if I would've won I’d have $6 million," Mosley remembered.

"I was thinking this snot nose kid is not gonna beat me, you know at 154 (lbs)."

After going the 12-round distance, the fight ended in a unanimous decision for Canelo: two judges scoring the bout 119-109, and the other, 118-110. Still, you have to admire an over-the-hill Hall of Famer putting his money where his mouth is and going for broke at the tail end of a legendary career.
