The AL East will once again be one of the better divisions in baseball. With the Blue Jays, the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Orioles, and the Rays, there are at least four teams in the division that will likely be in the race in September. I know, September is a long way away, but I still like to think about the long term as we focus in on the daily plays. Today the Blue Jays take on the Yankees in an AL East battle.
Toronto is off to a mediocre start with not much going their way. Major League Baseball didn’t do much to help them as they started the season with a long road trip. The first four games were against the Rays in Tampa, and then they went to Houston for three games. Now they have to travel to New York to face a hot Yankees team. The Blue Jays have been one of the more offensively gifted teams in recent years with a strong lineup, but they haven’t really showed up quite yet. In the young season, they are only averaging about three runs per game and hitting just .176 for the year. The pitching staff has also been an issue as they have a collective 5.34 ERA, and hitters are batting .289 against their staff. Today they have Yusei Kikuchi pitching against the Yankees. In the past, the Bronx Bombers have been pretty good, hitting .242 against him. Look at Gleyber Torres or Alex Verdugo for fantasy or prop bets today.
The Yankees can’t ask for a much better start than they’ve had this season. They are off to a 6-1 campaign and a large part of that should be attributed to their pitching staff. In the young season, they have a collective 2.53 ERA. Interestingly enough, the difference in stats between the Blue Jays staff and the Yankees staff aren’t that far apart. Hitters are batting .249 against the Yankees and their WHIP is 1.31. The offense of the Yankees is not off to a great start, but they are getting the job done as they are hitting just .238 as a team but have put in 32 runs and 57 hits. That averages out to a bit less than five runs per game and eight hits per game. Today they have Marcus Stroman taking the ball for the second time. Stroman is a very talented pitcher and looked great in his Yankee debut. In six innings of work, he allowed two walks and four hits with no runs allowed. Blue Jays hitters have been pretty good against Stroman in the past, hitting .279 against him, but most of them don’t have many at-bats.
I'm going with a player prop in this game, and I will mention it is a bit risky. I'm going to take Marcus Stroman to record a win in this game. I think the Yankees win this game, and I think Stroman is probably going to get through at least five or six innings. The Yankees winning the game is -155, which I don't like giving out as a play. Stroman to earn the win in the game is +140. I think that's a better play and better value. Sure, he could leave the game without the Yankees leading, but I think he probably goes six innings and the Yankees are ahead when he exits the game. I'll take Stroman to earn the win and give us a nice plus money pay day.
