Liberty Will Once Again Destroy The Fever

The WNBA continues to print money for me and our readers, so I am happy to continue doing these pieces until they tell me that no one cares or no one reads them. However, if you don't read them, you won't read this sentence, but somehow, I hope you non-readers know that you're missing out. I'm 7-1 now for Outkick WNBA plays and hit a 14:1 parlay in the league on Wednesday. I followed that up Thursday falling just short of winning another 14:1 parlay. That might sound like it isn't a big deal, and a loss isn't a big deal, but the reason we lost was because a player got injured. She was two rebounds away from us winning and missed the final 15 minutes of the game. Let's look to run this record to 8-1 with a game between the Liberty and Fever.

The Liberty are a team that I've talked about for much of this season. So far, New York looks like they are the best team in the league, and continue to find ways to win games. They are currently 17-3 and their most recent loss came in the Commissioner's Cup championship. However, that game doesn't count for their overall record as it is similar to the Play-In Tournament in the NBA. Frankly, I was a bit surprised about that loss, but we did get a victory in the game as I had the Liberty winning the first quarter and they did so with relative ease. Outside of that game, they have gone 12-1 over their past 13 games, with the lone loss being against the Phoenix Mercury. This is the fourth time that they will have faced the Indiana Fever and as you'd expect, they've made light work of Indiana in those games. In game one, on the road, the Liberty won by 36 points. In the second game, back in New York, their home opener, it was a bit tougher, and they only won by 11 points. Their third contest, again in New York, saw them win again by 36 points. Behind the trio of Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu, the team probably won't struggle in this fourth matchup either.

We all know about the Indiana Fever at this point. They are the team with Caitlin Clark, and they are the team that are making the WNBA have any type of relevance and importance. Sure, there are other great teams (the Aces sold out all of their home games this season, a first for the WNBA; the Chicago Sky have sold out multiple games in a row, etc.) but the draw the Fever brings is causing teams to move stadiums to accommodate the demand. Clark isn't the only player on this team, and although they aren't quite the level of the Liberty, they are a good team. Aliyah Boston is on the team and she has been a great player for two years now. Boston really should be the focal point of the offense and then Clark might be able to get some buckets from the focus shift. We know teams are game-planning to stop Clark as much as possible, so the shift has to be on the rest of the Fever players. One thing I feel like I should mention about Clark: while her defense is still poor, and her shot making draws the attention, her passing game has translated brilliantly to the WNBA. She has led the team in assists in all but one age and has had double-digit assists in three of the past four games. They are just 1-2 in those games, but it is good to see the other teammates getting involved as that will open up shots for her longterm. 

The reality is that the Liberty are on a mission to win the WNBA Championship after losing it to the Aces last season. This team is focused and locked in right now and frankly, no one will stop them outside of the Aces. The Fever have played the Liberty well, but you're giving me a spread of -8 for the game? I can't take the points with the Fever. Even in their best game the Fever lost by 11 to the Liberty. If it starts to get toward 10 points, I'd consider taking Indiana, but for me, give me the Liberty at -8. They are just significantly better than Indiana.
