With Re-Election Looming, Michigan Governor Whitmer Nixes Mask Mandates
It must've been getting hot under that mask for Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. In a budget proposal that's expected to be signed on or before October 1st, Whitmer and the state legislature have come to agreement on a proposed budget that would prevent health officials from mandating masks in schools. The budget proposal would also stop public agencies within Michigan from mandating vaccines.
Coincidentally, Gov. Whitmer, a Democrat, is up for re-election next November.
Per Click On Detroit, the proposed budget states that “the director or local health officer shall not issue or enforce any orders or other directives that require an individual in this state who is under the age of 18 to wear a face mask or face covering.”
The proposed $70 billion budget deal would also prevent Michigan public agencies from enforcing vaccine mandates on employees and customers, allocate $2.2 billion in higher education funding, $50.7 billion for state agencies and programs, as well as $17.1 billion for the school aid budget, per Fox News.
Whitmer's willingness to remove mask mandates and vaccine requirements comes on the heels of a Detroit Regional Chamber poll that showed only 48% of voters approve of her performance. That number decreased from 59% approval last fall. Additionally, a Trafalgar Group poll conducted earlier this month indicates that Whitmer's chances for 2022 re-election are dwindling. Republican James E. Craig, currently bests Whitmer by six percentage points.
The people of Michigan are making it known: they are not in favor of the strict lockdowns and mask mandates the governor has implemented and enforced since the pandemic started. And the numbers back it up.
