U.S. Involved In Deadly Kabul Airport Firefight
At least one Afghan guard was killed during an early morning firefight involving US soldiers and "unknown attackers" at Kabul airport Monday.
Since the Taliban retook Afghanistan in early August, thousands of Afghans have crowded the airport in an attempt to flee the country. The Germany military said that "unknown attackers" opened fire on those within the airport. Reports suggest the gunmen acted as snipers, perched just outside the airport fences.
Both U.S. and German forces exchanged fire with the unknown attackers before one Afghan guard was killed and three others were injured.
Hours before gun fight ensued, President Joe Biden held a White House briefing to address the chaotic situation in Afghanistan:
"We have a long way to go and a lot could still go wrong" said Biden.
“We’re executing a plan to move groups of these Americans to safety and to safely and effectively move them to the airport compound … I will say again today what I’ve said before: Any American who wants to get home will get home.”
A combination of gunfire and stampedes have led to the death of at least 20 people, including an infant, since the Taliban took Kabul.
