Report: Joe Manchin Considering Leaving The Democratic Party

Senator Joe Manchin (D - WV) is considering leaving the Democratic Party and would pull the trigger if President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats don't agree to cut Biden's infrastructure spending bill from $3.5 trillion to $1.75 trillion, according to MotherJones.com.

Manchin's plan, according to Mother Jones' sources, is to become an "American Independent" if the spending bill changes aren't met.

The two-step plan would include sending a letter to Senator Chuck Schumer in which Manchin would remove himself from his ranking Democratic position in the Senate. If that doesn't get results, Manchin would then change his voter registration from Democrat to independent.

Manchin told reporters Wednesday that the Mother Jones report was "bullshit," and added "I am where I am," when asked if he's staying in the Democratic Party caucus.

Politico reporter Burgess Everett tweeted Wednesday that he's had previous conversations with Manchin about this idea to leave the Democratic Party. "He's never, in my experience, ever truly opened the door to switching parties or caucuses," Everett wrote.
