Last week, a few early national title contenders saw their road to the College Football Playoff get a lot tougher, including the Auburn Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes both losing. Meanwhile, the USC Trojans flexed their muscles in a rout of the Stanford Cardinal. Let's look at Week 3 of the college football season from a bettor's perspective . . .

Tennessee at Florida (-5.5) (Sat, 3:30 p.m. ET) – Matchup Report

Tennessee ended an 11-game series losing streak versus Florida last year, but emotions will be high in Gainesville following the wrath of Hurricane Irma. Sometimes that can backfire by working against you, but the Gators will play much better defensively here and hold the Volunteers in check. Florida has covered the spread in three straight home games and won 12 of 13 straight up there, so look for the host to get back on track with a win and cover.

Clemson (-3) at Louisville (Sat, at 8 p.m. ET) – Matchup Report

This is a big revenge spot for Louisville and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson, who has gotten off to an equally good start this season. Jackson and the Cardinals lost at Clemson last season in a thrilling ACC matchup, and they will try to even the score this time around on their home field. While the Tigers have looked very good defensively, the Cardinals have won nine of 10 at home and will pull off the small upset SU as underdogs.

Texas at USC (-16) (Sat, 8:30 p.m. ET) – Matchup Report

Last week, USC was a great pick as a small home favorite against the Stanford Cardinal after struggling in the season opener versus the Western Michigan Broncos. This week, Texas visits the Trojans, who are favored by too many points. Can USC blow out the Longhorns? Sure, they can. But after seeing them let the Broncos hang around for most of the game, Texas will have a great shot at covering the spread as a large road underdog. The Longhorns have gone 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against Pac-12 opponents, according to theOddsShark College Football Database, and they will keep this one closer than expected to improve that trend.

Titans (-2) at Jaguars (Sun, 1 p.m. ET) – Matchup Report

The visitor has lost six straight meetings in this series, which means Tennessee is going to lose again in this spot. Jacksonville showed last week how valuable a good running back is to the offense, with rookie Leonard Fournette taking pressure off quarterback Blake Bortles. The Titans were one of the early sleepers bettors liked in the preseason, but maybe they were wrong, and that team should be the Jags instead. Take Jacksonville to get off to a rare 2-0 start and Tennessee to fall to a disappointing 0-2.

Eagles at Chiefs (-5.5) (Sun, 1 p.m. ET) – Matchup Report

Kansas City’s Andy Reid versus Philadelphia’s Doug Pederson in a teacher-pupil coaching matchup is a nice storyline, but one of these guys isn’t getting any younger and needs to keep winning more than the other. Reid’s Chiefs stunned the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots last week, and now they get to take on a second-year quarterback (Carson Wentz) playing in a hostile environment at Arrowhead Stadium. The Eagles have lost five in a row as road underdogs, going 1-4 against the spread in those games. Ride with Kansas City.

Cowboys (-2) at Broncos (Sun, 4:25 p.m. ET) – Matchup Report

Another home dog is barking this week, and it is Denver hosting Dallas. The Broncos should be favored in this spot except for the fact that they nearly let one get away from them on Monday night, and the Cowboys looked dominant on Sunday night against the New York Giants. Dallas is fortunate that running back Ezekiel Elliott can still play, but the team’s fortunes will run out here at Denver. The Cowboys have lost five straight to the Broncos, who will make it six.
