Johnny Majors Dies at 85

Johnny Majors, the legendary former player and head coach for Tennessee Volunteers football, has died at 85. The news was confirmed by the Knoxville News Sentinel. A cause of death has not been reported.

Majors played tailback at Tennessee from 1953-1956, and was the program's head coach from 1977-1992. His teams won SEC championships in 1985, 1989, and 1990; the Vols also won the Sugar Bowl in 1986 and 1991. Majors was also head coach at Iowa State from 1968-1972, Pittsburgh from 1973-1976, and Pittsburgh again from 1993-1996. Majors was the Sporting News Coach of the Year in 1976, and the SEC Coach of the Year in 1985.
