Herschel Walker Has Three Point Lead Over Warnock As Biden’s Support Tanks In Georgia
The 2020 presidential election was seen as a transformative moment in American politics in the state of Georgia.
President Joe Biden won the vote in Georgia, a "deep south" state, that was notoriously known for voting red. Biden received 49.5% of the vote, edging out Donald Trump by just 0.2%. He became the first Democratic nominee to win the popular vote in the state since Bill Clinton in 1992.
Just a little over a year later, all signs indicate that a majority of Georgia natives have soured on President Biden and Democrats in general. Per a new poll conducted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) released Thursday, just one-third of registered voters approve of the president's performance thus far -- a sharp decline from the 51% that approved of Biden in AJC's May poll.
Not only have Biden's numbers plummeted, but Herschel Walker is now firmly in the race for the U.S. Senate. When asked who they would vote for if the U.S. Senate election were held today, 47% of Georgia natives said they would vote for the former NFL and Georgia running back turned Republican politician, while 44% said they would vote for Democrat incumbent Raphael Warnock.
The race is one of the most expensive in the nation. Warnock, fresh off raising more than $9.8 million in the last three months of 2021, has $23 million in the bank for his re-election bid. Walker, meanwhile, has roughly $5 million in the bank.
Despite his poll numbers trending downward, Biden told reporters on Jan. 19 that he's unbothered by the troubling statistics.
"I don't believe the polls," Biden said.
