Georgia LB Adam Anderson Charged With Felony Rape

The Athens-Clarke police department has charged Georgia linebacker Adam Anderson with felony rape, after a complaint was filed on October 29. The linebacker was indefinitely suspended by head coach Kirby Smart after the athletic department was first made aware of the allegation on November 2.

He is currently being held without bond. He was booked at 7:45 ET, Wednesday night.

Attorney Steve Sadow provided a statement to ESPN's Mark Schlabach, in which his client denies the allegation. 

"Adam is innocent of the charge brought against him and intends to vigorously defend himself in court," Sadow said. "He will seek release on bond. Once again, Adam hopes and prays that the UGA community and the public keep an open mind and afford him the presumption of innocence that the law demands."

According to ESPN, he has not been arrested at this time. According to Athens-Clarke County Police Department incident report obtained by ESPN, the 21-year old woman had told police that she had gone to a house in Athens between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. on Friday morning. “The victim stated that she went to a residence after having some drinks and awoke to the suspect penetrating her while she was lying (in) bed. She stated that it was nonconsensual, and that she was able to leave.”

Later on that same day is when she reported the incident to the police department. The same day, the football team had left for Jacksonville, where they would be playing Florida. Anderson played in the game against Florida. This was all on October 29. Since this is an ongoing investigation, it was not disclosed whether Anderson has been contacted yet.

Steve Sadow, the attorney representing Anderson, released a statement on Thursday night to Athens Banner-Herald.

"Adam denies in the strongest terms possible the unfounded and unsupported allegations of sexual misconduct," Sadow said. "He has been notified of the allegations made to the police and to the UGA Equal Opportunity Office (EOO), and has come to learn that the complainant has already apparently made inconsistent claims -- that she was “unconscious” during the conduct to the EOO but “awoke” from sleep by the conduct to the police. In the interest of justice and fairness, Adam hopes and prays the UGA community and the public keep an open mind and not prejudge him based on inconsistent, unsubstantiated and baseless accusations.”

Anderson projected as a first round-draft pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and led the Dawgs with five sacks.
