Georgia, Alabama, Oregon And Ohio State At Top Of Second CFP Rankings

The SEC sits atop the College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings that were released on Tuesday night, with No. 1 Georgia leading the way. The selection committee stuck with Alabama in the second spot, even though the Tide struggled to beat LSU at home last Saturday.

After the SEC, it was Oregon at No. 3, followed by Ohio State at No. 4 and Cincinnati moving to the No. 5 spot, which lines up really well for them. If the Bearcats want to play for a title, they will need to impress the committee with better performances than what we saw against Tulsa.

As for the Big Ten, Michigan came in at No.6, while Michigan State came in behind the Wolverines at No.7, even though the Spartans beat them a few weeks ago. This has to be the shocker from the selection committee, though things will play out within the conference over the next three weeks.

Chairman Gary Barta was asked about Michigan being ahead of Michigan State.

"The Michigan-Michigan State discussion started last week. The Committee went back and forth. Michigan, statistically, is probably a more complete team."

Barta added more context to the committee's thoughts on Michigan.

"In the end, while there was a lot of discussion about watching the teams play and the stats and where Michigan is ranked statistically, it all was part of the discussion. ... Michigan just looks to have a more complete team on both sides of the ball."

So, the Oregon-Ohio State head-to-head matters, but Michigan State-Michigan doesn't? This question will be asked over the next week, which it should.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State. The Sooners are hanging around at the No. 8 spot, but will have to see a bunch a movement over the next three weeks to crack the top four.

In the 11-15 spots, it was Texas A&M, Wake Forest, Baylor, BYU and Ole Miss. Coming in at No. 16 was NC State, followed by Auburn, who dropped four spots to the 17th spot after losing in College Station.

The rest of the Top 25 was as follows: Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa, Pittsburgh, San Diego State, UTSA and Utah, with Arkansas coming in at No. 25 this week.
