FOX MLB Schedule Indicates Belief College Football Punts on September
The biggest implication of the news last week that the Big 10 and Pac-12 are not going to do out of conference games is the presumption that decision means the conferences are punting on September. Hopefully the combination exists where they get their ducks in a row and the country is ready for college football by the time conference play is supposed to kick off in October. The SEC and Big 12 have not yet announced their plans for out of conference games.
Anyways, with the news of the Big 10 and Pac-12 as a backdrop, it comes as no surprise then that Stewart Mandel of The Athletic noticed that FOX is airing MLB games in time slots that college football occupied for two of the four September Saturdays in 2019:
FOX shares rights for the Big 10, Pac-12, and Big 12 with ESPN and ABC. If the Big 12 winds up still having September games, there are windows in the rest of the day for them.
This news underscores that baseball, despite squandering an opportunity for an even longer runway as the owners and players haggled over nickels and forfeited most of July, has a real opportunity to pick up a lot of eyeballs in what could really be a fun 60-game sprint of a regular season.
