Former Giants OC Jason Garrett Rumored As Potential HC Hire For Duke

Jason Garrett was fired as the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants on Nov. 23.

Weeks later, Garrett is now atop the list of still-rumored coaching candidates fit for Duke's head coaching vacancy.

According to The Raleigh News & Observer, Duke is considering Garrett as a top candidate to succeed former head coach David Cutcliffe, who's led the program for 14 years.

Cutcliffe's coaching tenure in Durham, between 2008-2021, saw the Blue Devils go 77-97. In this past season, Duke finished with a 0-8 record in the ACC, compounded by it being Cutfliffe's third consecutive losing season.

Cutcliffe has long been credited with the development of former Giants quarterback Eli Manning and current QB Daniel Jones, a Duke alum. Garrett worked as Jones' play-caller since the start of 2020 and eventually got the call from Giants owner John Mara in 2021 to pack things up after leading an atrocious offensive attack.

Unable to successfully incorporate free agent pickup Kenny Golladay (signed to a $72 million deal) and former No. 2 pick Saquon Barkley in the Jones-led offense, the Giants parted way with Garrett.

Garrett's most standout achievement from his coaching tenure remains with the Dallas Cowboys, producing an 85-67 record between 2011-19.

Cutcliffe also worked with Peyton Manning during his time at Tennessee as their quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

Clemson OC Tony Elliott is another candidate targeted for the Duke vacancy, per Greenville News.
