Congresswoman Who Supported 'Defund The Police' Gets Carjacked And Robbed In Philadelphia

U.S. Representative Mary Gay Scanlon, a Democrat who represents Pennsylvania's 5th Congressional District, was carjacked and robbed at gunpoint Wednesday afternoon. Scanlon, who has previously supported efforts to "Defund the Police," was attacked in broad daylight and forced to hand over her keys and belongings.

A short time later, five suspects were arrested in connection with crime, thanks to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Funny how that works - they still protect you, even when you don't want to protect them...

The highjacking occurred when the 62-year old Scanlon was walking to her car, which was parked near a Delaware mall, shortly before 3pm Wednesday. Along with her SUV, the suspects also robbed the congresswoman of her personal cell phone, government issued cell phone, and her ID.

"She's physically OK, but her vehicle and possessions are gone," Lauren Cox, a spokesperson for Scanlon, told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In a tweet sent on Scanlon's behalf, the congresswoman thanked Philly's finest: "She thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for their swift response, and appreciates the efforts of both the Sergeant at Arms in D.C. and her local police department for coordinating with Philly PD to ensure her continued safety."

Scanlon's been in office since 2018 and has been a vocal supporter of police reform since it began to gain popularity in the spring of 2020.
