ClubProGuy: A Preview For the Sanderson Farms
This week the PGA tour invades Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship. This tournament, played at the Country Club of Jackson, is one of the more popular stops on the PGA tour due to the lack of talent in the field. It’s one of those rare events that gives the players the ability to change their career by somehow stealing a victory.
With past champions like Frank Conner, Richard‘s Zokol, Cameron Beckman, Peter Malnati, Cody Gribble, and last year‘s champ Sebastian Muñoz, the winner this week will most likely be someone you've never heard of before, and someone you will likely never hear of again.
On the medical front, the Sanderson Farms marks the return of Scottie Scheffler (+1000), who has been out due to a positive COVID-19 test since the week of the US Open. Although Scottie never felt sick, his recovery is nothing short of miraculous. Scottie joins a long list of PGA Tour players like Nick Watney, Harris English, Branden Grace and Chad Campbell who have somehow defied the odds and beat the virus. The fact he’s playing is a testament to his ability to stay at home and away from others while feeling perfectly healthy. Best of luck this week, Scottie.
I’m personally excited to see Stewart Cink (+6500) back in the field after his victory in California a couple weeks ago. Once again, Stewart’s son Reagan will be on the bag in place of Cink's regular caddy Kip Henley. Their little father-son bonding exercise at the Safeway Open cost Henley about $100K. Let’s hope the Cink’s miss the cut this week so it'll be a little less awkward for everyone involved.
Stewart tees off this morning with last weeks winner Hudson Swafford (+8000)and the anti-Bryson DeChambeau, Zach Johnson (+4100). How will Swafford respond after his clutch finish in Punta Cana and cashing that enormous winners check? Let’s just say, I would still be hungover and not afraid to miss the cut to get home for some Georgia football this weekend.
My pick this week is Sungjae Im (+1200). Not only is he the best player in the field, but I can’t think of a place on earth where a South Korean kid who doesn’t speak english could feel more comfortable than Jackson, Mississippi. This is a guy who never takes a week off and he’s bound to win sometime. Go get 'em, Sungjae....
