Athens Mayor References Trump After Illegal Alien Allegedly Kills UGA Student

The news cycle over the past week has been consumed with a horrifying, tragic story of the murder of a young student at the University of Georgia.

The alleged murderer, 26-year-old Venezuelan Jose Ibarra, is in the United States illegally, justifiably raising even more concerns about the border crisis exacerbated by President Joe Biden and his political party's open border policies. It's an understandable reaction considering the millions of border encounters under the disastrous Biden administration and how easily the federal government loses track of illegal aliens after they've been released.

But if you ask the mayor of Athens, Georgia, Kelly Girtz, the real problem isn't illegal aliens killing American citizens, open borders, or even prosecuting violent criminals. It's Donald Trump and anyone concerned about the unfolding illegal immigration crisis. What a surprise.

Athens has come under criticism from local residents for its virtue signaling sanctuary city declaration several years ago. The city council issued a resolution saying that the city welcomed "people from all lands and backgrounds," including illegal aliens. That resolution was signed by Girtz, which he of course defended after an illegal alien allegedly murdered a UGA student he didn't know. And in his defense, he of course turned the blame to former President Donald Trump.

"While 2019 was not that long ago, you might remember the dynamic we were living in, in the late teens in this country where you had the president of the United States speaking in the most vile terms about people who were foreign born," Girtz said. "And you had that notion metastasizing in places like Charlottesville --"

So a young woman is now dead in part because cowardly progressives were responding to Donald Trump and inaccurately linking him to Charlottesville. Sounds right.

Woke Ideology Comes Before Protecting Americans, Enforcing Laws

Girtz perfectly exemplifies the mouth breathing NPC level analysis of the modern woke left. Everything is Trump's fault, even Biden's border policies. The biggest concern isn't about enforcing immigration laws and protecting victims, but defending illegal aliens from criticism.

And sure enough, Girtz, without a hint of irony, said that the criminal is the one responsible for the murder.

"We are deeply sorry for this tragedy," he replied. "Responsibility for this crime rests solely upon the perpetrator."

It's pretty jaw dropping to see a woke progressive blame the criminal instead of blaming the murder weapon. But awareness of intellectual hypocrisy has never been a strong suit of the modern left.

Girtz and those like him are more concerned about protecting their ideology from justified criticism than about dealing with the ramifications of their own policies. Instead, they deflect blame onto Donald Trump and the reaction of concerned citizens. It raises the question, what will they do in the decades to come as more Americans are killed by those in the country illegally and Donald Trump is no longer around to blame?

Who are we kidding, they'll blame him anyway. Anything to take the focus off of their own disastrous failures.
