'Top Gun' Star Makes Major Announcement About Potential Third Movie

It sounds like another "Top Gun" movie is officially happening.

"Top Gun: Maverick" brought movie theaters back to life after significant struggles during the pandemic. It was also just a grade-A epic film.

It was pro-America, not woke at all and a ton of fun as millions of fans watched Tom Cruise reprise one of the roles that shot him to superstardom.

A third movie was likely after "Maverick" earned nearly $1.5 billion at the box office, but there's been little to no news about it. That's changed, thanks to star Glen Powell.

Glen Powell says third "Top Gun" movie has a production date.

Powell - who played "Hangman" in "Maverick" - appeared on "Happy Sad Confused" and said that another "Top Gun" movie has "a date" for production to start.

The admission seemed to stun people, and he was pressed on whether there was more information he could share with people.

"Absolutely not," Powell said when asked if he wanted to share more information, and then he quickly encouraged host Josh Horowitz to move off the topic and onto the next question.

You can watch his comments starting around 31:00, and make sure to let me know your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.

Given how quickly he wanted Horowitz to move off the topic of "Top Gun," I almost wonder if he wasn't supposed to let anyone know there is a production date on the books.

Powell wanted to quickly pivot and that's exactly what he did. Having said that, this is great news. "Top Gun" is an iconic movie and "Maverick" is one of the few instances where the sequel was every bit as good and maybe even better than the original.

If you're reading OutKick, odds are high you enjoy entertainment that focuses on giving viewers a great experience and not much else. You don't want to hear woke nonsense or be preached to.

"Top Gun: Maverick" was an incredible breath of fresh air, and I'm sure the third film will be the same way.

I also think I have a really solid plot idea. Why not have the third "Top Gun" movie be about fighting China over Taiwan with some dogfights over the Taiwan Strait? That would be an absolutely epic time. It would be timely and realistic. The only bad news here is that we still have no idea when a third movie might come out. I'd guess probably 2026 or maybe later if production still hasn't started. Whenever it does, I'll be seeing it. Let me know at David.Hookstead@outkick.com if you will too.
